How to turn on mod_rewrite

Hi, I notice that on a new installation, the mod_rewrite commands in my .htaccess files are just ignored. How can I turn on mod_rewrite?
I've so far tried uncommenting this line in http.conf and restarting the server:
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
But that does not seem to be enough.
Thanks,
Chad

Note the last commenter. You'll need to change more than one allowoverride.
