brows without file extensions

Does anyone know how I can change the configuration file to allow my browsing when using the localhost without the need for file extensions.

When I publish my sites I do not include the file extensions (i.e. I use index to go to the homepage rather than index.php). Is there anyway to enable this in easyPHP. I have tried clicking on a link in my localhost that has no extension and it says it cannot find the file. click one that includes the file extension and it goes straight there.

Any ideas?

I think what I am looking for is to set up content negotiation. any ideas? is it possible?

Maybe is it possible with mod_rewrite ?
